SHUT UP and sleep (Introduction)
“SHUT UP and sleep” has a variety of meanings.
Some use the expression to chastise chatty children who refuse to go to bed.
Others apply it introspectively to quiet their mind before retiring for the night.
For me, a somnologist, the phrase means something different; it speaks to the act of physically shutting the mouth and breathing through the nose to achieve better sleep.
Life begins with a breath. How that breath and subsequent ones are taken, through the nose or mouth, tips the balance as to whether for every gain, there is a setback. Most sleep and brain disorders are a downstream consequence of a broader breathing issue that begins in childhood.
